Received a curious e-mail today, subject line: Bread is Now in Stock. Had this been from some purveyor of foodstuffs I should not have been surprised, but as the message came from Powell’s Books,
it seemed more than a little odd that they should advertise the arrival of baked goods into their storeroom. Intrigued, I opened the message only to find that they had received a book by Paul Veyne which I had requested months ago: Bread and Circuses: Historical Sociology and Political Pluralism (1990).
